New to Lawton? Start with the PTO Top 10 “Must Do” List!

If you are--or will soon be--a new family at Lawton and have questions about the school, we put together a tip list with our 10 “must do” activities for new families at Lawton!

  1. Attend the annual meet and greet (week prior to school starting) and curriculum night (early September).  You can sign up for parent-teacher conferences at curriculum night as well as classroom parent volunteer opportunities. These events are also a great way to meet other families.

  2. Ask your teacher how they would like to communicate. For each teacher, find out whether phone calls, emails, or texts are the best way to communicate if a problem or need arises.

  3. Stay in touch with teachers and always attend parent-teacher conferences (your teacher will find a time that works for you!) to ensure you are up-to-date on your student’s progress and know about opportunities to get more involved in their education.

  4. Attend school events as much as possible, such as the run-a-thon (early Fall), school dances (usually in late Fall or early Winter), science fair or international fair (early Winter), movie nights and the ice cream social (June). Your involvement in school-wide events, helps build a community at large. You’ll meet other members of the school community and show your support for ALL kids.

  5. Attend PTO organization meetings.  These are virtual so you can join on-the-go! Parents/caregivers and teachers, meet regularly to discuss school issues and upcoming events. You can also check the website for the agendas and notes.

  6. Follow Lawton and AAPS on social media.

    1. Lawton Elementary Twitter

    2. Lawton PTO Facebook

    3. AAPS Facebook

    4. AAPS Twitter

  7. Read the PTO and Principal’s Newsletters and Communications. The PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) and the Lawton Principal send out frequent communications to make families and teachers aware of upcoming events, volunteer opportunities, and reminders of important school information (early release days, etc).

  8. Volunteer for school committees. Volunteers are needed to help plan, organize, set-up/clean-up for all-school events. There are many ways to offer your time and special skills. If you can’t volunteer in person, there are other ways to make a contribution, such as volunteering to translate minutes and flyers into other languages, for example. Sign-up for volunteer opportunities and share your special skills!

  9. Copy the Lawton PTO Events Google Calendar into your personal Google Calendar, so you get all the latest events and information in one place!

  10. Learn about your rights. It’s important to know what your rights are as a parent/caregiver when it comes to special services such as English instruction, immigration status, individualized education plans, and more. Learn more in Rights & Responsibilities - AAPS Students, Teachers. Staff, Parents, Guardians.
